Understanding Interpersonal Skills in Ottawa
Interpersonal difficulties rarely come from a lack of effort — most of the clients we see are trying hard, often harder than the people around them. The problem is usually a pattern learned early that no one ever helped you update: going quiet when you should speak up, over-explaining until the point is lost, agreeing to things you resent within the hour, or rehearsing conversations for days and then avoiding them anyway. These patterns show up as conflict with a manager, friendships that quietly die, partners who say they feel unheard, or a persistent loneliness even in full rooms. Therapy makes the pattern visible and gives you something concrete to do about it.
Sessions at our Kanata office (or virtual, anywhere in Ontario) are deliberately practical. We work from the situations you are actually navigating — a tense feedback conversation at work, a friend who only calls when they need something, a family dinner you dread — and use them as live rehearsal material. You will learn DBT interpersonal-effectiveness skills for asking clearly and refusing cleanly, practise difficult conversations out loud before you have them, and learn to notice your own stress responses (shutting down, escalating, appeasing) early enough to choose differently. Each 50-minute session ends with something specific to try before the next one.
Interpersonal struggles often travel with something else — social anxiety, ADHD, depression, or old relational trauma — and we address those layers when they are relevant rather than treating skills in a vacuum. But the focus stays on outcomes you can feel: meetings where you say the thing, boundaries that hold without a blow-up, friendships with more depth and less scorekeeping. Sessions are $160–$180, HST-exempt, with receipts for private insurance. If you are unsure whether this is social anxiety, a skills gap, or both, a free 20-minute consultation with a CRPO-registered psychotherapist is the easiest way to find out.

Key Benefits of Interpersonal Skills
Communicate clearly under pressure
Say what you actually mean in tense conversations — without escalating, over-apologizing, or leaving the room having agreed to something you didn't want.
Set boundaries that hold
Learn to refuse requests, limit contact, and protect your time in ways people can hear — and tolerate the guilt spike that follows until it fades.
Handle workplace relationships
Navigate feedback conversations, difficult managers, credit-taking colleagues, and meeting dynamics without either silence or blow-ups that follow you around.
Build social confidence
Reduce the rehearsing, post-event replaying, and dread around small talk, groups, and new people, so socializing costs less energy than it does now.
Repair conflict instead of avoiding it
Learn to name a rupture early, raise it without ambushing anyone, and repair relationships you would previously have quietly abandoned.
Deepen friendships
Move relationships past logistics and banter — practise the self-disclosure and follow-through that turn acquaintances into actual friends.
Therapeutic Approaches Used
Evidence-based therapeutic techniques tailored to your unique needs and circumstances. Our therapists are trained in multiple approaches. Schedule a consultation to discuss which approach is best for you.
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) Skills
Structured interpersonal-effectiveness tools for making requests, saying no, and keeping self-respect during conflict — concrete enough to use this week.
Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT)
A focused, evidence-based approach that targets current relationship disputes, role changes, and social isolation rather than open-ended exploration.
Behavioural Rehearsal
Practising real upcoming conversations in session — out loud, with feedback and revision — so the first attempt doesn't happen in the moment that counts.
Attachment-Based Therapy
Examines where your default relational moves came from, so long-standing patterns like appeasing, testing, or withdrawing can actually change.
Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about interpersonal skills and what to expect. Have more questions? Contact us or book a free consultation.
Is interpersonal skills therapy the same as social skills training?
They overlap, but therapy goes further. Social skills training teaches techniques — eye contact, conversation openers, assertive phrasing. Therapy also addresses why the techniques collapse under stress: the anxiety, self-criticism, or old relational patterns that hijack you mid-conversation. We teach the concrete skills and work on what interferes with using them, which is usually where books and courses have already failed you.
Can therapy help with communication problems at work?
Yes — workplace relationships are one of the most common reasons people book this service. We work on specific situations: delivering and receiving feedback, disagreeing with a manager without torching the relationship, speaking up in meetings, and handling colleagues who interrupt, take credit, or push work onto you. Because sessions use your real workplace scenarios as practice material, the skills transfer directly rather than staying theoretical.
What if my social difficulties come from anxiety or ADHD?
That's common, and it changes the approach rather than ruling you out. Social anxiety adds avoidance and post-event rumination; ADHD adds interrupting, drifting mid-conversation, and rejection sensitivity. We assess what is actually driving the difficulty and treat the layers together — skills practice alongside anxiety or ADHD-focused work. If a different service of ours would serve you better as a starting point, we will say so at the free consultation.
How quickly will I notice a difference?
Most clients try their first new skills within the first two or three 50-minute sessions, because every session ends with something specific to practise. Deeper change — feeling less drained by social contact, holding boundaries without spiralling afterward — typically builds over 8 to 16 sessions. Sessions are $160–$180, HST-exempt in Ontario, in person in Kanata or virtual across Ontario.
