Our approach to couples therapy

Isaac Davis, RP, works with Emotionally Focused Therapy and Relational Life Therapy, and his couples work is also Gottman-informed. In plain terms:

  • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT): helps you name the negative cycle you get stuck in, such as one partner pursuing while the other withdraws, and the needs for closeness and reassurance underneath it.
  • Relational Life Therapy (RLT): a direct, practical approach developed by Terry Real, where each partner looks honestly at their own part in the pattern and learns concrete skills for speaking up, listening, and repairing after conflict.
  • Gottman-informed work: practical ideas from Drs. John and Julie Gottman's research on couples, such as raising a complaint gently, repairing during an argument, and building everyday friendship and trust.

How many sessions does couples therapy take?

It varies. The International Centre for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy (ICEEFT) describes EFT for couples as a short-term, structured approach of about 8 to 20 sessions. Many couples start weekly or every other week. Longer-standing patterns, or recovery after an affair, often take longer. Your therapist reviews progress with you as you go, and together you decide how often to meet and when you are ready to finish.

What to look for in a couples therapist in Ottawa

Whether you work with us or someone else, look for:

  • Training in a couples approach. Couples therapy is its own skill set. Ask which model the therapist uses, such as EFT, Relational Life Therapy, or the Gottman Method.
  • A regulated professional. In Ontario, 'psychotherapist' is a protected title under the Psychotherapy Act, 2007. A Registered Psychotherapist (RP) is registered with CRPO, and you can look up any RP on CRPO's public register.
  • Fairness to both of you. A couples therapist shouldn't act as a judge who picks a winner, but should be honest with each of you about your part in the pattern.
  • Experience with your concern. Whether it's constant arguing, emotional distance, intimacy, or rebuilding trust after an affair, ask how often the therapist works with it.
  • A clear plan. After the first session or two, you should understand how the therapist sees the problem, what you'll work on, and how you'll both know it's helping.
  • Practical fit. Scheduling, location, and cost have to work for both of you. At Life Seasons, that means evening appointments, sessions in person in Kanata or by secure video anywhere in Ontario, receipts you can submit to your extended health plan, and a free 20-minute consultation before you commit.

Understanding Couples Counselling in Ottawa

Couples counselling in Ottawa works best when both partners come in curious rather than blaming. Most of the couples we see are not on the brink of separation — they are intelligent, committed people stuck in the same argument for the fifth, tenth, or hundredth time. Our job is to help you understand why that argument keeps happening and what it is really about. Using Emotionally Focused Therapy and attachment-based approaches, we map the negative cycle that has taken hold and help each partner recognise the softer emotions underneath the frustration.

Sessions are structured but never scripted. Expect to spend time slowing down difficult conversations so each person can be heard without interruption, learning how to bid for and respond to emotional connection, and practising repair after rupture. Many couples also work on specific content issues — intimacy, in-laws, screens, division of labour, finances, decisions about children — but the skills you build generalise, which is why couples therapy often improves problems neither partner brought to the first session.

You do not need to be married to benefit from couples counselling. We work with dating partners, engaged couples, common-law partners, blended families, and long-term committed relationships. LGBTQ+ and polyamorous couples are welcome. If you are unsure whether now is the right time to come in, book a free consultation. We will listen to what is happening and give you honest feedback on whether couples counselling in Ottawa is likely to help — and if not, we will point you toward a resource that will.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about couples counselling and what to expect. Have more questions? Contact us or book a free consultation.

How soon should we seek couples counselling?

It's often most effective to seek help early when problems first arise, rather than waiting until issues become deeply entrenched.

What if we can't agree on the problems in our relationship?

A neutral third party can help identify patterns and facilitate productive discussions about relationship concerns.

Can couples counselling help with premarital issues?

Absolutely! Premarital counselling can help establish healthy patterns and address potential issues before marriage.

How do I suggest couples therapy to my partner?

Choose a calm moment rather than the middle of an argument, and frame it as something for the relationship, not a verdict on your partner. You might say you miss feeling close and want help getting back there together. Many people worry that therapy means being blamed, so it can help to say you want to work on the pattern between you, not on them. Our free 20-minute consultation can be a low-pressure first step you take together.

What happens in the first couples therapy session?

The first session is mostly about getting to know the two of you. Your therapist will ask what brings you in, how arguments or distance tend to play out, what each of you hopes will change, and a bit about your history together. Each of you will have space to share your perspective, and no one is asked to make decisions about the relationship. By the end, you will usually have a clearer picture of the pattern you are stuck in and what working on it could look like.
